Google has acquired popular translation app, Word Lens maker Quest Visual for an undisclosed sum. The app available on iOS and Android translates visuals into text without the need of a data connection. It translates printed words seen with the phone's camera in real time. At present English, Russian, German, Portuguese, Italian, Spanish and French languages are supported.
Word Lens was first lauched on iOS in 2010, followed by Android in 2012 and Google Glass last year. The free version of Word Lens Translator is still available in the Play Store, but the paid version has now been removed.
It is possible that the free version of the app will be removed soon as well, Google will probably use the tech to improve Translate even further which already provides translations in 345 languages with over 10,000 language combinations.
