Apple has launched its latest models in its iPhone 16 series, including the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, featuring the new Camera design in the vertical arrangement, in global markets. These devices are equipped with the A18 SoC, which includes support for Apple Intelligence, and now feature the action button, previously exclusive to the Pro models. They also introduce new Camera Control features while maintaining the 6.1 and 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR displays.
Apple A18 -
The Apple A18 boasts a 16-core neural engine, optimized for large generative models, and offers up to 2x faster machine learning performance. It also provides 17% more system memory bandwidth, enabling more efficient access to generative models, and is built using second-generation 3nm technology.
The chip includes two performance and four efficiency cores, delivering 30% faster speeds compared to the A16 Bionic in the iPhone 15 and up to 60% faster than the A14 Bionic from the iPhone 12. It is also 30% more power-efficient than the A16 Bionic. The 5-core GPU is up to 40% faster than the one in the iPhone 15, 2x faster than the iPhone 12, and consumes 35% less power while maintaining the same performance level.
Camera Control -
A new feature called Camera Control introduces a camera button that's flush with the surface, encased in sapphire crystal and framed with color-matched stainless steel. A single click opens the camera app, while holding the button records video. The button incorporates a force sensor and Taptic Engine to provide responsive haptic feedback, simulating the feel of a mechanical camera shutter.
It also recognizes touch gestures, differentiating between a full press and a lighter touch. A light press activates a preview to assist with framing shots. An overlay provides quick access to camera functions like zoom, and double-tapping lightly reveals additional controls, which can be accessed by sliding to the desired option.
New cameras -
The devices are equipped with a new 48MP primary camera with a larger f/1.6 featuring a quad-pixel sensor, combining four pixels into one larger pixel, resulting in a 2 µm equivalent at 12MP, along with sensor-shift optical image stabilization. This sensor also offers a 2x Telephoto option, using the central 12MP for capturing full-resolution photos and 4K videos without digital zoom.
Additionally, there Is a 12MP Ultra Wide camera now features autofocus and a larger f/2.2 aperture, allowing 2.6x more light for improved image quality and enabling macro photography.
The dual-lens system can now capture Spatial Video and Spatial Photos for Vision Pro, utilizing stereoscopic information. Additionally, the camera employs intelligent audio processing to minimize wind noise. The Photos app has been enhanced with customizable options, allowing users to reorder collections and albums, and leverages Apple Intelligence to remove distracting elements from photos.
The iPhone 16 series offers 30% better-sustained gaming performance due to new thermal optimizations. It also includes ray tracing support and can run AAA games like Resident Evil 7 Biohazard and Assassin’s Creed: Mirage, which were previously limited to iPhone 15 Pro models. The design features an aluminium frame, a next-generation Ceramic Shield front, and a colour-infused glass back.
With Wi-Fi 7 compatibility and a larger battery, combined with the A18 chip and advanced power management, the iPhone 16 delivers a significant improvement in battery life. It now also supports up to 25W MagSafe charging.

The iPhone 16 and 16 Pro come in black, white, pink, teal, and ultramarine colours, and the iPhone 16 series will be available from Friday, September 20 on apple.com/store and in the Apple Store app, with availability in stores. Pre-orders start on Friday, September 13th at 5:30 PM IST.
