It seems there is a huge disconnect between Samsung Mobile's marketing, engineering departments and its customers. With such a mammoth organization, its not that difficult to imagine. Back to the topic of our discussion, the Samsung Galaxy J1. With just 512 MB RAM, 4GB storage, bland/bulky design, software issues and lackluster performance, the Galaxy J1 is not worth your time or money. Read more...
Samsung's Galaxy Grand line-up heralded the phablet revolution, everyone wanted a smartphone with a large display. As our pockets grew larger, so did the smartphone screen-size. The Galaxy Grand line-up was always meant to showcase some flagship features on a mid-range smartphone, on some models Samsung succeeded and the Grand Max is one of them. The clear defining feature of the Galaxy Grand Max is its camera. The rear camera with Sony sensor performs brilliantly in good lighting and works well in low-light as well. If it weren't for the Lumia 640 XL, this would be the best smartphone camera in the sub Rs. 15000 segment. Samsung did well on performance with the Snapdragon 410 chipset and 1.5GB RAM, all the while keeping the TouchWiz bloat to a minimum on the Grand Max. Read more...
Yu Televentures, the online-only brand/company of Micromax has a huge hit with the YU Yureka. Although the Redmi Note 4G has been available in the market with similar specifications, the YU Yureka running on Cyanogen OS, Rs. 1000 lesser price-tag made it an instant hit and its not without merit. The Yu Yureka is a 4G LTE dual-SIM device with a good display, good cameras and excellent performance. Yes, it does heat-up during gaming but its been said that the issues will be fixed with updates. Cyanogen has been working on several updates with a handful of units having issues with proximity sensor calibration and audio. Our unit did not have such issues and the Yureka performed quite well in all our tests. The build quality could've been better, but its quite light which makes handling the phone a lot easier. There's a detailed video-review which you can watch above and scores can be found below with pros/cons. Read more...
Right from the start we experienced touch-screen issues with the Lumia 535 Dual-SIM. It didn't matter whether we were in the browser, using various apps or gaming, the display didn't recognize taps well and sometimes just went bonkers. Microsoft acknowledged the issued and gave a fix. This review was done after the fix was installed and still the touchscreen behaved erratically. Adding to that is the inconsistent performance on the device, which made the phone respond even worse to taps and swipes. Gaming on lower-end Windows Phones has never been good, even the same hardware on Android performs better at gaming. Microsoft however was able to pack in two good cameras on the Lumia 535 and the battery-life too was quite decent, but they can't outweigh the lack of usability, where the primary interaction medium malfunctions more often than not. The Samsung Tizen Z1 is the first commercially available phone running Samsung's home-brewed TizenOS. The implemention, UI elements are quite similar to Samsung's TouchWiz skin for Android. But Tizen seems to perform slightly better on the lower-end hardware of the Z1. But this is still more of an experiment than a finished product. There's no app-ecosystem to speak off and with Android smartphones re-defining the meaning of being affordable, TizenOS and Samsung Z1 might have a tough time around. You can watch our Full-Review above with the brief summar of pros/cons below alongwith our detailed scoring. Read more...
Xiaomi heralded the age of affordable smartphones making the likes of Samsung and even local brands like Micromax take notice. The Redmi Note is no exception to Xiaomi's success in India. With a 5.5-inch HD display, octa-core processor, 2 GB RAM, 13 MP / 5 MP cameras and a price tag of just Rs. 8999, the Redmi Note is surely the device to beat in the sub Rs. 10000 segment. To an extent that's true but the company had to cut some corners to reach this price point. Find out more in our Full Review of the Redmi Note 3G. Read more...
Where the Canvas Knight Cameo falters is its pricing, more over it heats-up sometimes in even general use. The speakerphone is decently loud as is its display, but there is no gorilla glass protection the front or back which can be very easily scratched. The design looks premium, and the build is quite solid as well. The rear camera disappoints quite a lot, images turn out under-saturated, with weird colors and look over-processed. Moreover, the iPhone-esque design is something Micromax should be moving away from. Read more...
