Xiaomi has just announced the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus in China. The budget Android Redmi 5 comes with a 5.7-inch HD+ 18:9 full-screen display, with Snapdragon 450 octa-core processor and a 3300 mAh battery. The larger Redmi 5 Plus packs in a 5.99-inch FHD+ 18:9 display running on the Snapdragon 625 processor and a 4000 mAh battery.
Sadly, both still run on Android 7.1.2 Nougat instead of the latest Android Oreo, but do come with MIUI 9 onboard. Xiaomi has put a 12-megapixel rear camera on both phones with larger 1.25μm pixel size sensor, which makes for better low-light capabilities. There's a 5-megapixel front-facing selfie camera available as well. Given the full-screen display, the fingerprint sensor is on the back of the phone.
The Xiaomi Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus will come in Black, Light Blue, Gold and Rose Gold color options. It will be going on sale in China starting December 12. The Redmi 5 2GB RAM variant with 16GB storage has been priced at 799 Yuan (US$ 120 / Rs. 7,790), while the 3GB RAM option with 32GB storage comes in at 899 Yuan (US$ 135 / Rs. 8,790).
The Redmi 5 Plus also comes in two options, 3GB RAM with 32GB storage priced at 999 Yuan (US$ 150 / Rs. 9,750) and a 4GB RAM variant with 64GB internal storage priced at 1299 Yuan (US$ 190 / Rs. 12,700). Both are expected to launch next year in India.
