Sony has just launched the WiFi only variant of the Xperia Z Ultra in Japan. The mini-tablet, as it is being referred to now comes with a 6.4-inch 1080p display, quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor with 2 GB RAM running Android 4.2 Jelly Bean for about $500. The cellular radios have been removed from the phone making it a very compact tablet of sorts. At its size it surely was quite awkward as a phone, but as a tablet we can look at the device in a whole new light. Given its svelte build, its certainly more pocketable than say a Nexus 7 without compromising much on screen real-estate.
The Sony Xperia Z Ultra WiFi has been priced at 52,000 Yen (about $500) and will be available starting this week in Japan. At present there is no word on international availability, but it would certainly be an interesting option.
