Sony has made the Xperia Z Ultra phablet official, which you might recall was known by its codename Togari. The Xperia Z Ultra features a humongous 6.4-inch display and runs on the new Snapdragon 800 chipset. The display is 1080p and features Sony's OptiContrast and X-Reality tech with Triluminous technology borrowed from Sony TV's, something Sony has been working on as the successor of the mobile Bravia engine. Another feature of the Xperia Z ultra is that you can use a pencil or pen as a stylus as well, which would be a necessity with such a huge device.
The Snapdragon 800 chipset features a quad-core Krait 400 processor running at 2.2 Ghz and Adreno 330 GPU, and the Sony Xperia Z Ultra is the first device to use this chipset and running Android 4.2.2 Jellybean. Then there's the 8MP Exmor-RS sensor equipped camera unit, which is capable of both HDR stills and movies as well as record 1080p at 30 frames per second.
The Xperia Z Ultra uses the same design principles as the Xperia Z, with tempered glass back but with a new metal frame along the sides and at just 6.5mm it is even slimmer than the already petite Xperia Z. The Ultra is water resistant as well, with IP58 certification, which means it can be immersed at greater depth than 1m and for longer than 30 minutes. There's 4G LTE connectivity on-board as well, as well as the now customary WiFi, Bluetooth and NFC. There's a 3000 mAh battery powering everything, and increases the weight of the device to a whopping 212 grams, although Sony is marketing the Xperia Z Ultra as the slimmest 1080p smartphone.
The Sony Xperia Z Ultra is expected to launch in Q3 2013 with three color variants, white, black and purple.
