Samsung has begun mass production of 3GB RAM for smartphones, when the rest of the world marvels at 2GB RAM in their phones. The new 3GB unit is will use six class 4 LPDDR3 chips, manufactured in a 20nm process. LPDDR3 is the current standard used for mobile RAM, which stands for Low Power Double Data Rate. The six units are stacked symmetrically so that they are only 0.8 mm high and would allow for thinner smartphone with larger batteries.
The company also said that the new chip will offer speeds of upto 2,133 Mbps per pin and would allow for Full-HD video playback and storage, faster multitasking and support for LTE-A service which requires faster storage speeds. The Samsung Galaxy Note III will probably be the first device to sport the new 3GB RAM chip and others will follow after its launch in the second half of 2013. There's also a new Exynos 5420 chip that performs better than the current Exynos 5 chipset found in the Galaxy S4. This will also make its way into the Galaxy Note III.
