Well that's a shocker! Micromax, coming at second place after Samsung, is all set to take the crown away from Samsung in smartphone shipments in the country. Micromax shipped over 2 Million smartphones while Karbonn is gaining a foothold with its A and Titanium series as well, they come at second and third place in terms of smartphone shipments after Samsung.
Although the global smartphone market has become stagnant, India is seeing an explosion in smartphone sales, which have not overtaken those of featurephones. Smartphone shipments in Q3 2013 have nearly tripled year on year at 9.3 million up from 3.5 million in Q2 last year.
Another important statistic given by IDC shows that 5-7-inch (phablets) devices are most popular in India an account for a whopping 30% of the market. Although foreign brands are still quite popular in India, especially Samsung which reigns supreme in sales due to its new zero EMI schemes and huge discounts on flagship devices.
Nokia comes in at fourth place with its Lumia 520 taking the company forward, followed by Sony which is seeing better sales due to the Xperia L and other mid-range dual-SIM devices.
IDC also noted that India is all set to become the world's second largest smartphone market after China, which took the lead away from US in 2011.
