Karbonn A12+ is the latest entrant in the budget dual-core segment. We have benchmarked the A12 Plus on a variety of available tools, including Quadrant, AnTuTu, Vellamo as well as NenaMark2. The benchmarking video is embedded below and then we have the detailed scores of the various benchmark tests done on the Karbonn A12+ alongwith comparison with the Micromax Canvas Fun A74 and the Lava Iris 402.
Hardware Overview
The Karbonn A12+ is powered by the 1.3 GHz dual-core MediaTek Mt6572 chipset based processor, with 512 MB RAM and 4 GB internal storage. There's a 4-inch WVGA display that's sharp and bright.
It has a 5-megapixels fixed focus primary camera with single-LED flash along with a front-facing VGA camera. The phone also has some sensors, namely:
- Proximity Sensor – As the name suggests, it checks how close objects are. The proximity sensor is calibrated in such a way that while you are in a call the screen goes off as the sensor detects that your face is close to the device.
- 3-axis Accelerometer - To detect the change in motion from the initial configuration of the device, i.e. laid flat on a surface.
- Light Sensor - To detect changes in ambient light. However, this is disabled in the Karbonn A12+.
Benchmarks
Quadrant
Quadrant is a CPU, I/O and 3D benchmark app for Android, which provides total as well as separate scores of the tests it conducts. Based on the total score, a graph is generated to show where the phone lies wrt to other devices.
The Karbonn A12+ got a total Quadrant score of 3348, which lands in the same proximity as the much costlier Canvas Fun A74 which got a score of 3478. If we move into the bifurcation of scores, the A12+ got a CPU score of 6626, Memory 2832, I/O 4687 and 3D score of 2112.
AnTuTu 4
AnTuTu is a comprehensive benchmarking tool, which tests the complete hardware of the device including the CPU, GPU, RAM as well the storage attached to the device. Its an additive benchmark which adds component test scores rather than taking their average as Quadrant does.
The Karbonn A12+ scored 10,744 on the full AnTuTu benchmark, some categorized scores are given below:
- CPU 1626
- GPU 3540
- RAM 1290
- I/O 1371
These scores are great for a dual-core device, especially for one that's available for less than Rs. 5000 in the market right now.
NenaMark2
NemaMark is primarily a graphics benchmark which uses real rendered screens to check the performance of the GPU of the device.
We got a Nenamark2 score of 44.4 FPS on the Karbonn A12+. Therefore, high-end games should be playable with acceptable framerates on this smartphone using the Mali 400MP GPU.
Linpack
Linpack is a standard CPU benchmark, which scores your smartphone's processor in terms of MFlops. The Karbonn A12+ scored 51.55 on the single thread test while the Micromax Canvas Fun A74 scored 57.81 on the same test. Similarly the Canvas Fun A74 beat the Karbonn A12+ with a score of 85.7 versus 68.1 on the multithread test. But this test also depends on the ROM and CPU governor, therefore the scores are pretty consistent. However, we must keep in mind that the Canvas Fun A74 costs about Rs. 2000 more than the Karbonn A12+.
Vellamo
Vellamo has several chapters, we tested the HTML5 chapter which checks mobile browser performance, which includes SunSpider JavaScript and V8 benchmark. The Metal chapter measures CPU performance.
The A12+ from Karbonn scored 1681 on the Vellamo HTML5 test which put it at the top of the pyramid, even higher than the quad-core HTC One X and Samsung Galaxy S3. It scored 438 on the Metal benchmark putting it between the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note, which is admirable for a device available at this price point.
Multitouch Test
We tested the multitouch capabilities of the display on the Karbonn A12+, and found that the display supports five points of touch.
Therefore it is able to detect 5 individual touch inputs at once, which again goes to show that for the price you get a much better performing device and is definitely a good buy for someone looking for an entry level device on budget.

As you can see in the benchmarks above, the Karbonn A12+ holds its ground in benchmark scores.
Conclusion
The Karbonn A12+ has a solid build and great specs for its price. It proved its mettle in our benchmark tests and came out with flying colors. Seeing the benchmark results, we expect that the A12+ will be good for playing even high-end games. Till now we haven't faced any issues with the device, and the display is quite sharp, but seems a bit over-saturated at times.
