Google has re-designed its Play Store app for the web, and its a major UI overhaul which brings much needed speed improvements. The entire layout has been changed and the site seems more robust and caters directly to exactly what you are looking for with recommended lists. The list on the left has also been removed, and the homepage loads content as you scroll just like the android app.
The new item description pages feature details at the top with screenshots in the middle and load without even the slightest hiccup. The compatible devices list has also been changed to a floating drop-down list shown just below the install button. The screenshots load at full resolution, and if you click on the slider, it comes to its full size automatically.
