Google is gearing up for the release of a new foldable phone, tentatively dubbed the 'Pixel 9 Pro Fold', which is expected to supersede the previously anticipated 'Fold 2'. According to insights obtained by Android Authority, Google has revamped its naming strategy for its late 2024 Pixel lineup -
- Pixel 9 – with the codename "tokay"
- Pixel 9 Pro – codenamed "caiman"
- Pixel 9 Pro XL – referred to as "komodo"
- Pixel 9 Pro Fold – known internally as "comet"
These designations have been corroborated by specific software tailored for Google's 2024 devices. Previously, the device codenamed "Comet" was labeled as the "Pixel Fold 2", but it's mentioned in the report that the moniker "Pixel 9 Pro Fold" may still undergo alterations.
Should Google adhere to this naming convention and incorporate the next foldable into the Pixel 9 series, it would signify a significant deviation from the initial-generation Pixel Fold.
Incorporating Foldables into the Pixel Lineup -
The prospective inclusion of the new foldable within the Pixel 9 series represents a notable departure from the original Pixel Fold, which failed to meet expectations upon its debut in 2023.
Google's potential integration of the new foldable into its flagship range, coupled with the introduction of a new Tensor G4 chip, aims to address the shortcomings of the original Pixel Fold. Leaked images hint at a design more aligned with other Pixel 9 devices.
This strategic move would distinguish Google as the sole manufacturer integrating foldable phones into its core product lineup, rather than relegating them to a separate category. This shift could position the foldable as a fundamental offering within the Pixel lineup, rather than a niche and premium alternative.
Expected Launch Date -
If everything proceeds as planned, Google might unveil four smartphones in October: the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold, all anticipated to feature the upcoming Tensor G4 SoC.
While the transition from Pixel Fold 2 to Pixel 9 Pro Fold has recently occurred in internal communications, the report advises that details could evolve before the launch.
Further details are likely to emerge as the launch date approaches later this year.
