After urging customers to stop using their Galaxy Note 7 and returning them, planning for an OTA update to reduce battery charge from 100 to 60%, and working with authorities (like CPSC) for an official recall, Samsung has finally shipped 500,000 units of "safe" Galaxy Note 7 units for exchange in the US.
The Korean giant will also be releasing an OTA update to make the battery logo on your new exchanged Galaxy Note 7 green in color to remind you its safe to use. Samsung had to take Google's approval to change the battery icon color. A message in the power down menu will also tell you to not worry as the battery is now safe. Apart from this you will also be able to distinguish the safe Note 7 with a black square on the box.
Last we heard only 25% of the devices sold in the US had been returned and the rest were probably still being used.
Samsung has said that the Galaxy Note 7 units will be available in stores September 21st. Now, there's no reason to keep using your potentially hazardous Note 7 and return it for a new one from the store you purchased it from.
Working hand in hand with the CPSC, we are delivering as promised and moving quickly to educate consumers about the recall and make new Note7s available. New devices will be in stores no later than tomorrow and we will continue to take the necessary actions to ensure users are powering down and immediately exchanging recalled devices.
The company will only resume sales after all the affected devices have been exchanged. At present there is no word as to when the Galaxy Note 7 will be available in India where the phone was stopped from going on sale due to the global recall.
