Reliance Jio has set the Telecom World on fire with some of its announcements, although there is a lot of fine print to go through. The tariff plans as they stand right now don't look as path breaking as were thought earlier. But they are still cheaper than the competition especially with unlimited free voice calls.
Now, that's only applicable if you have VoLTE capable smartphone, if not calls will your data balance. You can have a better look at the plans here. We have received several queries on how to port to Reliance Jio from Airtel, Vodafone and Idea or any other network using MNP.
Here are the steps to keep your current mobile number but still get onboard with Jio 4G:
- The first step is to send a SMS from the number you want to port. Type PORT "mobile number"(eg. PORT 9910012345) and send it to 1900. SMS charges may be applicable.
- You will receive an SMS shortly with the Unique Port Code (UPC). It is valid for a duration of 15 days and needs to be kept safe till you port your number to Reliance Jio.
- Get photocopies of your Photo ID, Address Proof and also 2 Passport size photographs (preferably with white background.)
- Next, you need to head to a Reliance Digital, Digital Xpress Mini or Jio partner Store and ask them for a customer application form. Fill out all the necessary details, including the UPC in the form and submit it.
- A new smart SIM card will be given to you which can be used as Nano, Micro or Mini SIM. You will remain with your current network operator for the next 5 days. You will receive a SMS with approximate time when your old SIM will stop working after which you can start using the new Jio SIM card in your 4G smartphone.

No call or data balance will be carried forward to Reliance Jio, so you should not recharge for more than you can use within the time it takes to port. We have received confirmation that porting is now available for Reliance Jio but we would advise against it, till the welcome offer is over. Once commercial operations begin in 2017, only then you should use MNP to switch to the network.
Update 6th September 2016:
Details about Reliance Jio 4G MNP have been updated after confirmation.
